Open Call: Volunteer Committee Member
Location: Glasgow & remote working
Deadline: Monday 24th April Midnight
Interviews: Week beginning 24th April
Enquiries email: firstname.lastname@example.org
SaltSpace was established as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in 2019 to provide a platform for emerging artists across Scotland. The organisation is membership based and as a not for profit organisation, all profits go back into supporting our members. It operates from two premises in Glasgow, one at Dornoch Street, and the other at the Axiom Building. These provide our members with studios, workshop facilities, a gallery, and more recently a cinema.
The SaltSpace Committee comprises a team of volunteers who ensure the aims and objectives of the SaltSpace manifesto are met. We are seeking applications from our members to volunteer to be a member of the SaltSpace committee. This volunteer role helps to programme, curate and build opportunities for the SaltSpace membership. The committee meets regularly, approximately once a month, or more often if deemed necessary. Meetings have been conducted online since the onset of the Pandemic and it is the intention to continue with this platform for the foreseeable future, although occasional meetings in person will be required where necessary.
As a cooperative we operate on a non-hierarchical structure and favour collaboration to facilitate a supportive and creative working environment to meet, connect and develop. As an artist-run organisation the committee is continually learning new skills alongside supporting and learning from each other and our members. We feel this brings invaluable experience as practising artists. Decision making is a collective process and everyone holds a shared responsibility for the running of SaltSpace which requires focused effort and care to sustain.
This is a great opportunity to build upon the amazing legacy that SaltSpace has established with the possibility to design and create aspects of the programme.
One of our core aims going forward is to address our structure in order to eventually enable serving committee members to be paid within their role. This will better support the work we do and create a fairer, healthier structure. There is some way to go, however, until such time, committee members are remunerated at the Living Wage rate for some of their time spent on SaltSpace activities that directly relate to enhancing the organisation.
We are looking for a volunteer to join the SaltSpace Committee. As part of the organisation you would be helping to support SaltSpace’s programming and administration, overseeing the general running of our gallery, cinema and studios alongside providing support for funding research/applications and committee meetings together with opportunities for our member base.
This role would likely suit someone with some interest/experience in arts management. You should be passionate about the creative industries, driven to deliver an ambitious programme and keen to be part of a small team.
Experience of managing budgets, fundraising and delivering projects to deadlines is desirable but not essential.
Being part of the committee offers a lot of creative flexibility, and we would encourage you to consider how our programme could develop or how we can best facilitate our network of artist members. Being a member of the committee is very rewarding and includes working flexibly and requires time and attention.
What to expect
Below is a list of tasks that you would be involved in together with the committee:
Supporting the planning and delivery of the programme.
Participate in selection processes of exhibitions and residencies.
Cultivating new partnerships and foster current partnerships.
Investigating Funding and Sponsorship opportunities.
Attending SaltSpace Annual General Meeting and regular committee meetings.
Assisting with general day to day arts administration.
Helping the team to organise, curate and hang the annual members show.
Organise Gallery/cinema site visits and studio viewings and assist with setting up spaces for events.
Experience of producing and delivering creative projects, programmes and events.
Experience of coordinating teams.
Experience/awareness of third sector, non-profit, cooperative networks, working structure.
A general knowledge of current funding streams and development opportunities.
Interest in a collaborative working structure and a proactive nature.
Passion and commitment to SaltSpace’s values of diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
SaltSpace seeks to continue facilitating a diverse and accessible space which requires diverse voices on our committee. We encourage applications from those with disabilities, from black, Asian or ethnic minority communities, LGBTQI+ and those who have been socially and economically disadvantaged by their circumstances and upbringing.
Interviews will be held the week commencing 24th April by the committee.
