About us
SaltSpace is a creative co-operative based in Glasgow which aims to provide a supportive platform for new graduates and early year creatives as a stepping-stone into their artistic career.
In 2019 we were provided with three previously vacant shop units within the Saltmarket area through Glasgow City Property’s, ‘Space for Growth’ initiative. We had a Gallery space hosting exhibitions, a Community space which was a workshop space and a Makers Space which hosted a collection of studios rented out by members.
We previously sat in the historically rich High Street and Saltmarket area which was once a significant part of Glasgow that fell into dereliction as the 20th century progressed. SaltSpace aimed to highlight the historical importance, aiding in its revitalisation.
We moved out of our High St. gallery premsises at the end of 2022 and moved out of our community/cinema space and makers space in the Saltmarket area in the summer of 2022. This was a phased transition into to finding a bigger space which could house all of SaltSpace's activities under the one roof.
For the last few years our studios have been situated in a bigger space at the Axiom Building located in central Glasgow along the River Clyde, 5 minutes from Anderston station.
In 2025 we acquired our new gallery space, situated just 5 minutes from Queen Street Station, at 38 Albert Road and converted our Axiom gallery into new studio spaces.
Our commitee
SaltSpace was founded by students and graduates of Glasgow School of Art. Since 2019, our committee has continuously grown and reformed, giving artists from a range of backgrounds opportunities to learn the skills of running a non-profit community interest company.
As a cooperative with a democratic constitution, we have a non-hierarchical group of committee members. We hold regular meetings so that our decision-making is a collective process and the running of SaltSpace involves everyone.
